Certificates fail in predictable ways: a fold line that cracks the print, a decade in a sunlit frame that bleaches the ink, and an embossed seal that never scanned well to begin with. The working process

    Unfold and rest the document flat

    Leave a folded certificate flat under even, light weight for a day or two before scanning. A relaxed fold scans far better than one you force open on the scanner glass, and it will not crack further.

    Scan at 600 DPI in colour

    Certificates carry fine engraved detail and coloured inks that greyscale destroys. Scan the full sheet including borders - do not crop to the text, because the border is part of what makes the restored copy look right.

    Capture the seal separately if it is embossed

    Photograph a blind-embossed seal with raking light - a single light source low and to one side. The shadow it casts is what makes the emboss visible, and you can composite that capture back over the flat scan.

    Reconstruct the missing print along cracks and tears using the surrounding stroke direction and border pattern. Straight-line damage through regular engraving is one of the cases reconstruction handles well, because the pattern is predictable.

  • Security features - holograms, microprint, colour-shifting ink, embossing - cannot be reproduced by restoration, and a restored copy should not be presented as if it retained them.
  • Where print has flaked away completely, reconstructed characters are inferred from context and should be checked against another copy of the record.
