Most genealogical dead ends are legibility problems, not availability problems: the record exists, but the ink has faded, the microfilm copy is poor, or the page has browned to the point where the handwriting disappears into the background. Restoring the scan recovers the stroke detail you need to transcribe a name, date, or place correctly - which matters, because a misread surname sends a whole line of research in the wrong direction.

For documents you hold yourself, scan in colour even for monochrome handwriting, at 600 DPI for small or dense script. Colour retains the ink-versus-paper tonal difference that greyscale throws away.
Remove the browning and blotching first so the page reads as a consistent background. This alone often lifts faded handwriting back into visibility without touching the strokes themselves.
Reverse-side ink is fainter and sits at a different tonal level than the front-side writing. Separating the two clears the column so the entry you need is readable in isolation.
Now rebuild contrast on the surviving ink. The aim is a legible stroke you can read and judge for yourself - not a smoothed, confident-looking version of a letter shape the model guessed at.
Record your transcription against the original source reference, and keep the unrestored scan with it. Other researchers need to be able to check your reading against the same evidence you had.
