Genealogy and Family History Research

Most genealogical dead ends are legibility problems, not availability problems: the record exists, but the ink has faded, the microfilm copy is poor, or the page has browned to the point where the handwriting disappears into the background. Restoring the scan recovers the stroke detail you need to transcribe a name, date, or place correctly - which matters, because a misread surname sends a whole line of research in the wrong direction.

What makes this difficult

Knowing the failure modes tells you what to do about them - and which ones no amount of processing will fix.

Iron gall ink fading and browning

The ink used in most pre-20th-century records fades to a pale brown that sits very close in tone to aged paper. The stroke is still there, but the contrast between ink and page has collapsed.

Second-generation copies

Many records survive only as microfilm or photocopies of the original. Each generation of copying adds grain, blown-out highlights, and lost mid-tones, and those artefacts are what you are actually trying to read through.

Period handwriting

Secretary hand, copperplate, and the long s are hard enough to read cleanly. With degraded contrast on top, the difference between an f and an s - or between two similar surnames - becomes genuinely ambiguous.

Ruled forms and bleed-through

Census sheets and registers are dense grids, and ink from the reverse side often shows through, crossing the column you are trying to read.

The working process

    Start from the best available copy

    Before restoring anything, check whether a better scan exists. Many archives have rescanned collections at higher resolution than the microfilm copies that circulate online. Restoring a better source always beats restoring a worse one.

    Scan originals in colour at 600 DPI

    For documents you hold yourself, scan in colour even for monochrome handwriting, at 600 DPI for small or dense script. Colour retains the ink-versus-paper tonal difference that greyscale throws away.

    Even out the paper tone

    Remove the browning and blotching first so the page reads as a consistent background. This alone often lifts faded handwriting back into visibility without touching the strokes themselves.

    Suppress bleed-through from the reverse

    Reverse-side ink is fainter and sits at a different tonal level than the front-side writing. Separating the two clears the column so the entry you need is readable in isolation.

    Recover the faded strokes

    Now rebuild contrast on the surviving ink. The aim is a legible stroke you can read and judge for yourself - not a smoothed, confident-looking version of a letter shape the model guessed at.

    Transcribe from the restored image, cite the original

    Record your transcription against the original source reference, and keep the unrestored scan with it. Other researchers need to be able to check your reading against the same evidence you had.

Where the limits are

Stated plainly, because knowing this before you start is worth more than an optimistic sales page.

  • Restoration improves legibility; it does not transcribe or interpret handwriting for you, and it cannot confirm that a name you read belongs to the right person.
  • Where reconstruction fills in a character, that character is inferred. Never build a genealogical conclusion on a reconstructed letter without corroborating evidence.
  • A restored copy is not a substitute for the archival source reference. Cite the original record, not your restored file.
  • Some archives restrict how their scans may be modified or republished. Check the terms of the collection you are working from.

Frequently asked questions

Can restoration make faded census or parish records readable?+

In most cases it materially improves them. Faded iron gall ink usually still sits on the page at low contrast, and evening out the paper tone then rebuilding stroke contrast brings the writing back into view. Records that were poorly microfilmed decades ago improve less, because the detail was lost at copying time rather than on the original page.

Will it read the old handwriting for me?+

No. Restoration is an image process - it makes the strokes visible, and the transcription is still yours to do. That separation is deliberate: you should be reading the evidence rather than trusting a machine's guess at a surname.

Can it remove ink showing through from the back of the page?+

Usually, yes. Bleed-through is fainter and tonally distinct from front-side writing, which is what makes it separable. Heavy bleed-through that is as dark as the primary text is harder and may leave traces.

Should I restore the archive's scan or ask for a better one?+

Ask first. Many archives have rescanned collections at far higher resolution than the copies circulating online, and starting from a better source beats any amount of restoration on a poor one.

How should I cite a restored record?+

Cite the original archival source - repository, collection, reference number - exactly as you would normally, and note separately that your working image was digitally restored. Keep the unrestored scan so another researcher can check your reading against the same evidence.
