Fire damage almost never destroys a document evenly. The usable strategy is to capture what survives before it degrades further, then work outward: remove smoke haze and soot discolouration from the readable area first, recover scorch-darkened text at the edges second, and only then reconstruct the parts that burned away - clearly labelled as reconstruction.
Knowing the failure modes tells you what to do about them - and which ones no amount of processing will fix.
Smoke deposits a fine, even film that flattens contrast across the entire page. It is not localised damage, so cropping around it does not help - the whole scan reads grey and washed out.
Heat browns the paper progressively from the edge inward. Text sitting in the darkened zone is still physically present but has almost no contrast against the scorched background.
Charred paper is brittle and can crumble on contact. Every additional handling operation costs you content, which makes the first capture the most important one.
Loose soot smears if you wipe it, and water or foam used to extinguish the fire adds a second, overlapping damage type on top of the burn.
Step by step
Wiping soot grinds it into the fibres and takes the ink with it. Loose surface debris can be removed gently by a conservator with the right tools; everything else should be left in place and handled digitally.
Support fragile sheets on a rigid backing board when you move them. Lifting a charred page by one edge is how it breaks in half.
If the document is too brittle to place under a scanner lid, photograph it instead: flat, evenly lit from both sides to avoid glare, camera parallel to the page, at the highest resolution available. A good photograph beats a scan that destroys the original.
Start with the global problem. Removing the smoke film restores overall contrast across the sheet and often makes the central text readable again before any reconstruction is needed.
Work on the darkened margins next. Localised contrast recovery separates surviving ink from browned paper, which is a different operation from brightening - brightening lifts the scorch as much as the text.
Only after everything real has been recovered should you fill missing edges and corners. Reconstructing early biases the result, because the model fills against damage rather than against recovered content.
Keep the pre-restoration capture, and note which regions were filled. For business, insurance, or archival records this distinction is the difference between a useful copy and an unusable one.
